Teller County Sheriff Updates on Containment Progress

Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell reported that the Highland Lakes fire, which broke out in Divide and threatened several homes, is now 60% contained. Over 150 firefighters have been tirelessly working to control the fire.

Evacuation Orders and Progress

Evacuation orders for over 650 homes were lifted, with mandatory evacuations still in place for nearly 700 homes. There are hopes to gradually release residents back to their homes starting Wednesday morning.

Investigation and Potential Causes

The fire is believed to have started as a structure fire, not a wildfire. An investigation is underway, but the exact cause is still unknown. One home has been destroyed, with investigations being conducted to determine the origins of the fire.

Response efforts have been aggressive due to high winds and extreme fire conditions. A red flag warning is in effect, and a Stage 3 burn ban has been imposed. Snow in the forecast may help in extinguishing the fire.

Evacuees faced heavy traffic while leaving the area. Road closures are in place, including County Road 511 and County Road 51 from County Road 5 to County Road 512. The fire has been declared an emergency disaster to facilitate greater assistance.
