Meta Introduces Digital Currency for Virtual Goods in Horizon Worlds
Introduction of Meta Credits in Horizon Worlds
Meta has quietly launched Meta Credits, a virtual currency for purchasing digital goods within the Horizon Worlds metaverse platform. This new feature has been rolled out in select countries including the US, UK, and Canada without much fanfare.
Usage and Availability of Meta Credits
Meta Credits can be acquired within Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest or through the Meta Horizon mobile app. They can be purchased at a rate of 300 credits for 3 US dollars, with additional bonus credit bundles available for users. These credits can be used to buy premium in-app items in Horizon Worlds but cannot be used for hardware or accessory purchases, nor can they be transferred between accounts.
Meta Credits Economy
With the introduction of Meta Credits, Meta is establishing a foundation for its metaverse economy. However, details on whether creators can convert earned Meta Credits into real currency remain unclear. Users can find more information on Meta Credits in the Meta Quest Help Center.
Meta Credits and Age Restrictions
Individuals over the age of 13 can purchase Meta Credits, with preteens aged 10-12 requiring parental permission within their Meta Account. Meta has expanded Horizon Worlds to include teens aged 13-17 in the US and Canada, with plans to include preteens in the near future. Age-appropriate worlds and events are being implemented to cater to younger users.
Parental Concerns
Considering the unfiltered nature of interactions in metaverse apps like Horizon Worlds, parents may want to exercise caution when allowing their children to engage with such platforms.
