Meta Introduces Update to Reduce Bluetooth Audio Latency on Quest Headset

Meta Unveils Solution for Bluetooth Audio Latency

Meta has revealed plans for a software update aimed at addressing Bluetooth audio latency issues on its Quest headset. This update is expected to enhance the usability of Bluetooth headphones and earbuds with the device.

Details of the Update Shared by Meta Developer Relations Engineer

In a video presentation for developers, Meta’s Developer Relations Engineer, AR Schleicher, briefly mentioned the upcoming software update. The update will target the Bluetooth audio frequency on the Meta Quest 3S headset, which notably lacks a headphone jack.

Improvements for Bluetooth Audio Quality

While the headset still offers built-in audio and support for USB headphones, the removal of the headphone jack paves the way for enhanced Bluetooth audio capabilities. Following an Android 14 upgrade set for release next year, users can expect reduced latency, making Bluetooth audio a more viable option.

Significance of Lower Latency for Meta Quest Headsets

The current high latency in Meta Quest’s Bluetooth audio poses challenges for fast-paced activities like gaming and fitness apps. By significantly reducing latency, Meta aims to make Bluetooth audio a seamless alternative to wired headphones, aligning with the prevailing trend towards wireless audio solutions.

Anticipated Launch of Low Latency Features

Schleicher hinted that while Bluetooth audio would have been an ideal feature at launch, technical constraints prevented its immediate implementation. However, the upcoming software update is slated to address these issues, ensuring a smoother Bluetooth audio experience for users.
