XRP ETF Delays, Major Spanish Bank Backs Bitcoin, and New Token Listings by Coinbase

Here are the top news stories making waves in the crypto world today.

XRP ETF Decision Delayed by SEC

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced a further postponement in its review of Franklin Templeton’s proposed spot XRP ETF. Originally slated for a decision on May 3, the timeline was shifted to June 17, and it has now been extended to late July. The SEC is currently inviting public feedback prior to finalizing its decision. This delay is not necessarily an indication of disapproval; rather, it’s part of the thorough review process. Franklin Templeton, which filed its S-1 form earlier in March, is the largest entity to bring forth a spot XRP ETF application. Other prominent firms like Bitwise and 21Shares have also submitted competing applications. Many analysts predict that the SEC could approve several spot altcoin ETFs by the end of 2025, with optimistic sentiments reflected in Polymarket’s betting odds on XRP’s chances.

BBVA Encourages Bitcoin Investment

As per recent reports from Reuters, BBVA, a major player in the Spanish banking industry, is now suggesting that its affluent clients consider investments in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Depending on their risk appetite, clients are encouraged to allocate between 3% and 7% of their portfolios to these cryptocurrencies. Philippe Meyer, the head of digital and blockchain solutions at BBVA Switzerland, has been advising private clients on Bitcoin investments since last September. This significant move could alter the landscape for cryptocurrency investment, marking BBVA as one of the first traditional banks to actively support crypto investment strategies rather than merely accepting them. As Spain’s largest bank alongside Santander, BBVA oversees around $700 billion in assets and caters to approximately 80 million clients globally. Notably, about 95% of EU banks have yet to delve into the cryptocurrency space.

Coinbase Introduces New Ethereum Token Listings

Coinbase has officially announced the listing of a new Ethereum-based token named Spark (SPK) on its platform, as highlighted in a recent update on its official X account. This token is now available on both the Coinbase platform and its mobile applications, labeled as “Experimental.” Furthermore, Coinbase plans to introduce Spark perpetual futures on its International Exchange and Coinbase Advanced. The SPK-PERP trading markets opened on June 19, 2025. This addition is part of a broader push, as Coinbase has also incorporated other Ethereum tokens this month, including PancakeSwap (CAKE), Lagrange (LA), and Ethena (ENA). The token Ethena (ENA) is available for transactions on Coinbase and its mobile apps, allowing users to engage in buying, selling, converting, sending, receiving, or storing the asset.
