Government Crypto Wallet Hacked and Returned $20 Million by Attacker
Return of Stolen Funds
An attacker breached a US government-controlled crypto wallet and drained $20 million from it, only to mysteriously return most of the funds the next day. The blockchain analysis platform Arkham Intelligence reported that $19.3 million was sent back to the government address within 24 hours of the initial breach.
Speculations on the Return
While the motives behind the return remain unclear, it is speculated that the high-profile nature of hacking a government-related wallet may have dissuaded the attacker from further attempts to launder the funds. However, some tokens sent to instant exchanges like Switchain, HitBTC, and N Exchange still remain outstanding.
Bitfinex Hack Connection
The breached government wallet was found to hold funds seized from the 2016 Bitfinex hack, where 119,754 Bitcoin worth $70 million was stolen from the exchange. Ilya Lichtenstein admitted to orchestrating the attack and was later arrested along with his wife, leading to a significant crypto seizure by the Department of Justice.
Crypto Market Update
- Bitcoin is currently down 0.7% at $67,130.
- Ethereum has decreased by 2.1% to trade at $2,470.
Conclusion
The swift return of stolen funds from the government wallet highlights the complexities and risks associated with crypto security. The ongoing developments in this incident underscore the importance of robust security measures within the cryptocurrency space.
