Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority Embraces Blockchain to Assist Passengers and Airlines
NCAA Selects Blockchain Solution for Passenger Assistance
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has opted for a blockchain-powered platform to aid stranded or dissatisfied passengers while mitigating operational risks for airlines. Breezetech Technologies was chosen for its practical solution, as revealed by Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA.
Four-Way Collaboration for Consumer Protection
Achimugu stated that the agency had been collaborating with insurance companies to design a new system that caters to consumer protection needs without jeopardizing airline operators. Describing the solution as a four-way partnership between technology, insurance, operators, and the regulator, Achimugu emphasized the importance of a model that aligns with stakeholders’ interests.
Nigeria’s Growing Adoption of Blockchain Innovation
This move by NCAA is part of Nigeria’s broader adoption of blockchain technology to address societal problems. The government, notably the Central Bank of Nigeria, introduced a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) called eNaira in 2021, making it the first in Africa to do so. Additionally, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is developing ‘Nigerium,’ an indigenous blockchain, for national security.
Blockchain Transforming Industries in Nigeria
Various sectors in Nigeria are embracing blockchain technology for enhanced efficiency and security. The Nigerian stock exchange plans to launch a blockchain-enabled exchange platform to attract younger investors, while the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement Scheme (NIBSS) has adopted Zone, a blockchain-based payment system for transactions. These initiatives demonstrate the potential of blockchain to revolutionize industries and drive economic growth.
Potential of Blockchain Technology
Blockchain technology offers transparency, security, and efficiency across industries, leading to cost savings and improved user experiences. The Nigerian government sees blockchain as a catalyst for innovation, job creation, and enhanced public services, underscoring its commitment to leveraging blockchain for societal progress.
