Ubisoft Releases First Blockchain Game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles
Ubisoft Entertainment SA has officially launched its first blockchain game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. This tactical NFT battler is now available on PC, featuring a free-to-start model that allows players to engage in battles using unique figurines that can be purchased with in-game currency or cryptocurrency.
The figurines in the game are NFTs with prices ranging from $7 to $64,000. Champions Tactics pits players against each other in turn-based battles using squads of three figurines, each with distinct stats that allow players to create strategic teams. While players can participate without buying figurines, investing in NFTs may provide a competitive edge.
Francois Bodson, studio director at Ubisoft Paris, highlighted the game’s development approach, emphasizing the use of blockchain technology to deliver innovative gaming experiences. With a focus on player ownership and empowerment, Champions Tactics aims to offer deep strategic gameplay reminiscent of traditional trading card games.
The game has received an Adults Only rating, possibly due to its blockchain elements and use of cryptocurrency. This launch comes after Ubisoft’s earlier foray into NFTs with the Quartz platform in December 2021, where Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint featured NFTs. Despite facing limited success with only 15 NFTs sold during the beta phase, Ubisoft remains committed to exploring blockchain technology in gaming.
Overall, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles represents Ubisoft’s continued efforts to incorporate NFTs and blockchain into the gaming industry, showcasing a commitment to innovation and player engagement in the evolving landscape of digital entertainment.
